ICAB recognises several classes of membership to reflect the different stages and pathways of a professional accounting career in Barbados. Whether you are newly qualified, in active practice, based overseas, or a distinguished long-serving member, there is a membership category that reflects your standing within the Institute. Each category carries its own eligibility criteria, designatory rights, and annual subscription requirements. Every member may denote his/her membership of the Institute by the use of the professional designation “Chartered Accountant and/or the designatory letters “CA”.
An Associate Member is a person admitted to ICAB who has successfully completed the examinations of an Approved Professional Body for Accounting Technicians and the required practical experience to obtain the Accounting Technician designation, but has not yet completed the period of Approved Practical Experience required for admission as an Ordinary Member.
An Ordinary Member is a person admitted to ICAB who has satisfied the educational, examination, and Approved Practical Experience requirements for ordinary membership. Ordinary Members are entitled to use the professional designation “Chartered Accountant” and the designatory letters “CA”.
Practising Members are ICAB members who hold a valid Practising Certificate issued by the Institute, allowing them to offer accounting services to the public in Barbados. There are three practising certificate categories, each with different fee requirements.
An Ordinary Member who is ordinarily resident and working in a jurisdiction outside Barbados and CARICOM may apply for Overseas Membership. Annual subscription fees for Overseas Members are 50% of the Ordinary Member rate.
Any Ordinary Member may apply to become a Fellow of ICAB if they have been a member of the Institute for a continuous period of not less than ten years, commencing on or after January 1, 1990. Every Fellow may use the designatory letters “FCA” to denote their fellowship.
An Ordinary Member may apply for Retired Membership if they have attained the age of 60 or older, have retired from full-time work, and are not a director of a public company or Public Interest Entity. Annual subscription fees for Retired Members are one third of the Ordinary Member rate. Practising Members applying for Retired Membership must also submit their Practising Certificate with their application.
The Council may elect any person to Honorary Membership by resolution passed by three-fourths of those present at a Council Meeting. Honorary Members do not pay an admission fee or annual subscription but must sign an undertaking to observe ICAB’s Act, by-laws, and regulations. Unless they were previously an Ordinary Member, Honorary Members are not entitled to vote, stand for election to Council, or attend general meetings.
The Council may elect any member to Life Membership by resolution passed by three-fourths of those present at a Council Meeting. Eligibility applies to past Presidents of ICAB, members who have rendered outstanding service to the Institute, and members who have attained 70 years of age and completed 30 years of membership. Life Members pay no annual subscription fees but retain all membership rights and privileges held at the time of election.
Practising membership applies to ICAB members who hold a valid practising certificate and are approved to provide public practice services. The type of practising certificate determines the member’s approved scope of work, including whether they may practise generally, specialize in a defined area, or audit Public Interest Entities.
A General Practising Member is an ICAB member who holds a valid General Practising Certificate. This allows the member to practise across public practice areas, including audit, tax, financial consulting, and non-assurance accounting services, subject to ICAB’s Public Practice Regulations and approved practical experience requirements. To qualify, the member must complete at least 156 weeks of general training and work experience in a Post-Qualification Training Office. At least 104 weeks must be completed in auditing for members applying for a General Practising Certificate.
A Practising PIE Member is a member who holds a General Practising Certificate and audits Public Interest Entities, also called PIEs. A PIE includes publicly traded entities, entities that take deposits from the public, banks or similar financial institutions, credit unions, mutual funds that take third-party risk or funds, and entities that provide insurance to the public. Because PIE audits carry a higher level of public interest responsibility, members who perform these audits are identified separately from other General Practising Members.
A Specialty Practising Member is an ICAB member who holds a Specialty Practising Certificate. This means the member’s public practice is limited to one or more approved specialized areas, such as tax, financial consulting, or non-assurance accounting services. For this certificate, the member must complete the required practical experience, including at least 104 weeks in the specialized area of public practice in which they intend to practise.
