CONTINUOUS EDUCATION

What is Continuing Professional Development (CPD)?

The CPD programme supports lifelong learning and professional growth for all ICAB members. It recognises that the quality of professional services depends on each member’s commitment to keeping their technical knowledge and professional skills current in a changing regulatory and business environment.

CPD activities may include formal courses, seminars, structured learning programmes, technical committee participation, and other professional development activities that help members adapt to evolving standards, technologies, and professional responsibilities.

While CPD alone does not guarantee professional competence, without a commitment to ongoing learning, maintaining the required standard is unlikely. Members should also be aware that CPD records may be submitted to the Investigations Committee in the event of a regulatory review.

What is the CPD Programme

Why CPD Matters

The CPD program exists to support both individual members and the profession as a whole. Its key objectives are to:

01

Ensure members maintain a high level of technical and professional knowledge

02

Enable members to adapt to new standards, techniques, and economic conditions

03

Reinforce members’ understanding of their professional responsibilities to clients, employers, and the public

04

Provide a structured framework that allows members to meet mandatory CPD requirements in line with IFAC obligations

All ICAB members are expected to remain up to date with professional developments and demonstrate an ongoing commitment to maintaining high standards of competence. CPD records may be reviewed as part of an investigation or regulatory process where required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Members must complete a minimum of 20 CPD hours each year and at least 120 CPD hours over a rolling three-year period. Of the 120 hours required over three years, 60 hours must be verifiable. A flexible approach is permitted, provided the three-year CPD requirement is met.

Attending seminars, courses, or structured learning programs are examples of verifiable CPD activities. Reading, research, and independent study are examples of non-verifiable CPD.

Examples of activities that may qualify as CPD include workshops, seminars and courses, technical meetings and conferences, professional or postgraduate studies, composing or delivering technical content, and taking part in technical committees. Members are responsible for deciding whether an activity is relevant to their role.

Examples of activities that do not count as CPD include social events, such as dinners or networking events, general reading without structured learning, internal administrative meetings, and routine tasks that do not include a learning component.

If registration for the CPD was made through the Portal, the hours are recorded in the Member’s account following confirmation of attendance at the CPD. If the CPD was hosted by an alternative organization, members must record the details and hours for the CPD activity in the Portal and then submit it.

Regardless of the origin of your CPD activities, CPD declarations must be submitted annually through the ICAB Member Portal.

CPD declarations must be submitted by March 31 of the following year.

No. Supporting documents are not required at the time of submission but must be retained in case of audit. However, the ICAB Member Portal does allow members to upload supporting documentation when non-ICAB CPD activities are uploaded to a member’s account.

Members must retain supporting documentation for at least the most recent three-year period.

Yes. In exceptional circumstances, the Council may grant exemptions. Applications must be submitted using the prescribed form in the ICAB Member Portal with supporting justification.

A member is considered non-compliant if they do not submit a CPD declaration, do not meet the required hours, or fail to comply with the Regulations. Non-compliance may result in formal notification, a requirement to submit a remediation plan, or referral to the Investigations or Disciplinary Committees if the issues persist.

Yes. ICAB may conduct audits of CPD submissions and request supporting documentation to verify compliance.

CPD is mandatory because it helps ensure that members maintain their professional competence, keep up to date with evolving standards, meet international requirements under IFAC, and continue to provide high-quality services in the public interest.
