BiMPay is Barbados' new national instant payment system, launched on June 12, 2026. It is important to distinguish between the BiMPay payment rail and the BiMPay e-wallet.
The BiMPay payment rail is the national payment infrastructure that now supports domestic interbank account to account transfers between participating banks and credit unions. It replaces the former ACH and RTP rails for those interbank transfers.
The BiMPay e-wallet, by contrast, is an optional customer channel. It provides another way to access BiMPay services, including for persons who do not hold a traditional bank account, and for those who want additional functionality. No Barbadian, whether employee or otherwise, is required to download or use the BiMPay e-wallet.

The Central Bank of Barbados therefore wishes to make the following clear.
The BiMPay e-wallet is voluntary. No employer, regardless of size or sector, should make downloading or using the BiMPay e-wallet a condition of employment, or a requirement for receiving wages or salaries.
Employers who already pay employees by direct deposit, electronic transfer, payroll file, or other bank or credit union arrangements should continue to work through their financial institutions in the normal way. Existing payroll, bulk, and batch payment arrangements through employers’ financial institutions may continue.
BiMPay operates in the background as the national rail for domestic interbank account to account transfers. Employees do not need to interact with the BiMPay e-wallet unless they choose to do so.
Employees may continue to receive wages and salaries through the channels already available to them, including direct deposit to a commercial bank account or credit union account. The introduction of BiMPay does not require employees to change those arrangements.
To avoid unnecessary rejections or delays, employers should contact their bank or credit union to confirm any file format, account format, validation, or submission requirements that apply to payroll and other electronic payments under BiMPay. This is a matter for employers and their financial institutions to manage.
Employees with existing direct deposit arrangements need not take any action and should not be asked to download the BiMPay e-wallet for payroll purposes.”
