Frequently Asked Questions

ICAB is the Barbados professional accountancy organisation that regulates the country’s accounting industry. We are responsible for overseeing and upholding the highest standards of integrity, competence and professionalism amongst accountants while protecting the public interest.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Barbados (ICAB) is the national regulatory and professional body for accountants in Barbados. ACCA, The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants is a global professional accounting body based in the UK. It offers the accounting qualifications, which allows members to practice accounting in many countries around the world. ACCA and ICAB have a partnership whereby ACCA prepare accounting students for professional examinations, which are a requirement for membership in ICAB.

ICAB membership is not mandatory for all qualified accountants. The Companies Act (Chapter 308) requires companies to be audited by a member of ICAB who holds a general practising certificate. ICAB encourages all qualified accountants, especially those who provide services to the public, to become members. This allows ICAB to better represent the profession and protect the public interest.

ICAB Barbados adopted IFRS Accounting Standards and IFRS for SMEs Accounting Standard for the preparation of financial statements. International Standards on Auditing (ISAs) were adopted for the audits of financial statements. ICAB follows internationally recognized accounting, auditing, and ethical standards to help ensure that the profession in Barbados meets global benchmarks of quality, integrity, and transparency.

The best way to keep up with ICAB events and initiatives is to keep an eye on our social media pages including LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook.

ICAB Barbados supports Accounting Leadership locally through education, governance, ethics, advocacy, member services, and professional development initiatives.
